Chapter 6. Figure 1. The Peltier effect corresponds to the heat transfer from one end of a conductor to the other caused by the passage of an electrical current. When a voltage is applied across a semiconductor thermocouple, electrons in the N type material migrate towards the positive terminal. Similarly holes in the P type material migrate towards the negative terminal. The charge movement is accelerated thanks to an electric field (yellow arrows) created by applying a voltage between the terminals of the device and this result into heat being dissipated through a heat sink.
