Genomics, the study of the sequence and gene set making up the genome, of viruses of microorganisms is becoming increasingly important. It allows researchers to access the full sequence diversity of viruses, facilitates the discovery of previously unknown viral types and gives a better insight into evolutionary relationships. In this chapter, I review the current methods used in genomics of viruses of microorganisms, and highlight what is known about the major groups of viruses.
