Abstract
Among the many scientific hurdles and uncertainties facing AIDS vaccine development, we are still learning how to optimize immunogens and vaccination strategies to elicit protective HIV-specific immune responses in humans. Many vaccine prototypes have been studied in pre-clinical and Phase I studies, most based on reasonable assumptions about the need to induce HIV-1 specific CD8 T-cell immunity and/or neutralizing antibodies.
