Abstract

Over 65 million people have been infected with HIV since AIDS was first recognized in 1981, and over 25 million of them have died. AIDS is thus the worst epidemic to strike humanity in recorded history. This chapter provides an overview of the HIV and AIDS epidemic by region, highlighting epidemiological trends, the genetic diversity of HIV and differences in the modes of HIV transmission.
