Abstract

No abstract is available for this chapter, so we present the first paragraph of the introduction. The need for a safe and effective vaccine to prevent AIDS is obvious. Twenty years since HIV was identified as the etiologic cause of AIDS, the WHO-UNAIDS joint program estimates that nearly 40 million people were living with HIV/AIDS and over 3 million died in 2005 alone, and ten new infections occur every minute-the vast majority in the developing world.
