Abstract
The highly unusual segmented genomes of Borrelia species can contain over 20 autonomously replicating DNA molecules. Many of the molecules, including the chromosome, are linear with covalently closed hairpin ends. Current knowledge of the replication and maintenance of DNA molecules will be reviewed, including the process of telomere resolution, whereby the covalently closed hairpin ends are generated from replicative intermediates.
